Right, let's punt this option for now – not that we just add another tab
overnight. This needs design, I guess. (Also, I don't quite understand
your toolbar popup idea … you better illustrate it.)

There are actually two counter-points I can immediately think of (we
actually discussed this in the design chat before):
* it would not look good together with the Cogwheel menu, because that
is largely unrelated to search – so we'd need a big placeholder to
separate these items
* it would increase the minimum necessary width for the dialogue, so
it would look more crammed

Most Gnome software does it like this, many mobile application do this
(often out of screen space concerns). But especially Mac OS software has
been placing the search bar at the end of the toolbar. I can see where
both of you are coming from. :)

Re: Michel – yes, that is actually already among our design bugs.
Re: Rafael – yes, a path bar like in [1] or [2] would be great. BUT, I
don't think it would work very well with LibO (or rather, VCL) right
now.
So, I'd rather it looks like a simple breadcrumbs bar on a website [3].
It will be ugly, but at least the function is clear.
(Better ideas welcome.)

This is fixed on master. (Actually, I brought up the same issue in my
first mail in this thread.)
