I don't think what I'm suggesting is that far off from Export calendar as .ics...

I'm wondering if instead of Download .ics to desktop or Export calendar as .ics...

Could we try Download calendar to desktop or 1 step further: Add to my calendar app... (with instructions to import the .ics file). It seems like users will be more interested in the end goal (getting the task and calendar data to their calendar app) then the intermediate step of downloading or exporting the calendar as an .ics file.

It sounds like given the ubiquity of support for .ics import, users who are unable to import .ics files will be relatively rare.

Question: Can we rely on the right behavior happening when users d- click on the .ics file? On Mac OS d-clicking on an .ics file launches Apple iCal and starts the import workflow.

This is the same logic behind saying Subscribe with Chandler and Apple iCal as opposed to Subscribe via CalDAV and WebCal.

I was wondering if in keeping with the logic that users will have an easier time identifying which calendar client they use than figuring out about calendar file formats and sharing protocols, should we rename the Download .ics file to Desktop option: Download to Outlook or Add to my calendar (with
instructions as to how to do that.)

Are there other mainstream calendar clients where this would work? Palm? I don't think Entourage supports .ics although my version may be out of date.

pretty much every calendar application on the desktop and the web
supports importing and exporting icalendar. i bet entourage does too.
if you take a look around at the many web calendars, most if not all
say "export your calendar as ics" or something to that effect.

Are there compelling use cases for downloading .ics file into Apple iCal and
Chandler instead of simply subscribing to the share?

i can't think of any.
