Well a different way to look at it is, the pre-existing calendar
helps the user understand what Cosmo is. It's disconcerting to sign-
up and log into something that is blank and be immediately confronted
with options. Exploring the UI then becomes this thing that the user
has to actively do, rather than something the user just falls into
because they're provided with an inviting calendar canvas to play
with, right off the bat.
Imagine firing up an email client for the first time and there's no
Inbox, Outbox or Trash. No welcome message.
In fact, it would be ideal if when people typed in osaf.us, there was
already UI for them to play with, to help encourage them to sign-up
for an account.
It's the same logic behind staging homes with furniture and decor to
sell real estate or dressing up mannequins in full outfits to sell
clothes.

So, given the usage scenarios, does an OOTB calendar make more sense?
i think it makes sense for the user to be able to easily cause a
calendar to be created, but i think the magic calendar that appeared
out of nowhere is mysterious. as a user, i'd much rather see a page
listing all my options, like i did in my previous message, that
recommends to me i create a calendar and tells me what that means.
