I've assigned a bug to myself to figure out this problem: https:// bugzilla.osafoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8053

Would it be possible to have a 'Share with:' pulldown for sharing the way we have a Protocol pulldown for Incoming mail? Optionally, we could also have an Auto-configure button next to it, like we do for Mail? Is there a way to ping the server to see if it is a Cosmo/SNARF or WebDAV server? We can certainly tell if the address is pointing to the Hosted Service.

OPTION 1: Auto-configure
So the workflow would be:
1. User selects Sharing from the New account pulldown.
2. User enters sharing server URL, etc...
3. 'Share with:' pulldown is set to Chandler Sharing Service by default.
4. User hits the Auto-configure... button.
5. Chandler returns the settings pop-up with suggested values for Protocol, Port and SSL.
6. User applies Settings.
7. Hooray.

OPTION 2: Manual-configure
If Auto-configure for sharing isn't a brain-dead thing to add, then we could just do:
1. User selects Sharing from the New account pulldown.
2. User enters sharing server URL, etc...
3. 'Share with:' pulldown is set to Chandler Sharing Service by default.
4. User can manually change the pulldown to either Cosmo/SNARF (wotever we call it) or WebDAV server. Open issues: What about CalDAV server? Or Apple's CalDAV server, does it have a name? Hula? Oracle? How will people know that we can work with these servers?
5. User figures out their own settins.
6. User tests accounts.
7. Hooray.

Hmm, a dilemma... In the short term, I actually do need to have the user choose between "Cosmo Sharing" and "DAV Sharing" when they're setting up their accounts, as the two forms of sharing are about to become very different beasts under the hood. Perhaps we'll find the time to make it look like there is no distinction between the two types of sharing accounts, but for me to make progress on the new sharing framework I have to present them as separate account types for the time being.
