To solve the problem of finding an old item with a particular time context, might it work to use the calendar view? I generally find that long lists are hard to work with any way you slice it. Not that we shouldn't try to make the sort order the best it can be, but at some point it seems like you transition to a situation where the calendar view or Find become necessary.
