Okay I'm merging these 2 thread, because it seems that one is the
solution to the other.

+ Consolidate File Menu - http://lists.osafoundation.org/pipermail/

Heikki made the argument that allowing users a way to manually
export / reload their data independent of upgrading is important for
moving data from one computer to another and doing local backups.
However, as Heikki suggested we *can* simplify the UI by
consolidating Import/Export with Export/Reload. I don't really see
how we can combine them into one pair of dialogs (short of
implementing a wizard of sorts.) However, we could do something as
simple as creating sub-menu items under import and export.
File>>
+ Import>>
++ Import Tasks and Events from .ics File...
++ Reload Chandler Data from .chex File...
+ Export>>
++ Export Tasks and Events to .ics File
++ Export Chandler Data to .chex File
Does anyone see any issues with this proposal?

Do we even need Export/Reload in the File menu if we have Upgrade
menu
item + Auto-reload when upgrading to a new version.
Yes, that scenario won't work on multi-user systems.

Heikki, I like the idea of more consolidation, but I remember that we
specifically wanted to differentiate between regular ole file Import
with Reloading .chex files.
It would be different experience, but we'd just need two menu items
instead of 2 x number of formats we support. In the import.../
export...
case you'd just choose the file first, and get the import/export
options
(if any) after that. FWIW, this is the model of import/export I am
used
to from other programs (Chandler is the only one that comes to mind
that
has separate menu entries for different formats).
