The SUN guys are working on porting HAL to Solaris http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/hal/2006-April/004910.html I'm not sure why we couldn't split the battstat applet into a separate tarball for those users who don't have the org.freedesktop.Hal service at their disposal.
