So if user got such frequent crashes, we suggest him to switch to vanilla ALSA (or OSS in Sun). He uses mentioned GUI aka "great switch" to turn off PA and go ALSA way, in final having working sound. If Gstreamer is set to be configured automatically, it will fall back to alsasink (at least mine Hardy does), so it is just matter of proper pulseaudio process management and having sensible documentation.
