You can.
telnet to the machine as a given user and (assuming the user is logged

Vino is started via a capplet as most gnome desktop services and afaik 
realVNC doesn't provide a tray icon in gnome either (nor any desktop
integration). So why does it make realVNC better ?

Because with vnc-server doesn't have the capability to dynamically hook 
into an already running desktop session.
This is a must have feature for remote administration scenario.
Vino was implemented for that. vino is a vnc server.

As far as I recall, the problem for solaris is that vino is using gnutls 
http://www.gnu.org/software/gnutls/ as oppose to the equivalent
library for solaris.

I believe using PAM is an ARC requirement for the integration of vino in 
solaris.
