I concur. But maybe we could make this more specific like:

- All apps that are part of the base Gnome product by default should be 
functional name only except where there is a clearly identified, well 
known and equally preferable alternative

thus...
- Gedit would be Text Editor
- Gnopernicus  would be Screen Reader/Magnifier
- Then Mail could be Thunderbird Mail (Mail - Thunderbird) or Evolution 
Mail and Calendar (Mail and Calender - Evolution)

I'm just cautious of being too strict on the rules with option 2 as we 
may end up with conflicts to official names like:
"Office - StarOffice"  which just sounds a bit silly.
