Even with "-logverbose 6" verifying the 1600x1200 mode was validated, it refuses to use this with the cryptic message:
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Due to hardware capability constraints, disabling display (WW) NVIDIA(0): device SUN X7200A (DFP-1) in MetaMode (WW) NVIDIA(0): "nvidia-auto-select,nvidia-auto-select". I suspect this has something to do with the memory placement optimization defaults added in R180 for compiz. I will experiment with workarounds.
