I verified this problem with metacity as the window manager with drivers
180.44 (2009.06) and 185.18.14.  Even with "-logverbose 6" verifying the 
1600x1200
mode was validated, it refuses to use this with the cryptic message:

  (WW) NVIDIA(0): Due to hardware capability constraints, disabling display
  (WW) NVIDIA(0):     device SUN X7200A (DFP-1) in MetaMode
  (WW) NVIDIA(0):     "nvidia-auto-select,nvidia-auto-select".

I suspect this has something to do with the memory placement optimization
defaults added in R180 for compiz.

I will experiment with workarounds.
