I've verified the new Quadro NVS 290 VBIOS fixes the problem with 
1600x1200 displays.

With great care, the VBIOS can be field upgraded with this program 
(internal access only
for now):

  http://solaris-x86.eng/nVIDIA/nvbios/nvs290.zip

Extract the files nvs290.exe and cwsdpmi.exe to a DOS bootable floppy or 
USB drive.
Boot off this drive and run nvs290.exe.

I suspect this will also fix OpenSolaris bug 9486 but I have not been 
able to reproduce
this on my system.
