that does stop the window placement/panels in full screen problems but it makes my windows look ugly, and turns off things I use a lot like the ring switcher compiz plugin, which is worse. for me anyway

Steps to reproduce: At login prompt change to gnome classic. Open a browser, go to youtube.com and select a video. Click the 'Full Screen' button to maximize. Gnome panel should disappear, instead it's still displayed. Attached screenshot. Edit: It behaves like this even when playing videos locally with a media player such as vlc. The gnome panel initially disappears but reappears after a couple of seconds. As a workaround before playing any videos on full screen, set the gnome panel to hidden. It will still show a 1px white border though.
