gnome-shell has nothing to do with this problem. Replaced the Ubuntu Gnome system with Ubuntu Unity and continue to have the problem in the spreadsheet, in fact fails more consistently. Could almost agree that this is a hardware problem if there were not so many ways to do the copy/paste using different keys/mouse/menu but they all fail the same way.
