NB passes after repeating a few times on:
- OSX Lion 10.7.5 incl R16B03
In my tests this often gets stuck around 576 in 07-use-checkpoints.t
This is very hand-wavey but

was added recently; if somebody can revert this & re-try `make distcheck` that
will be very helpful. I'll re-read through this tonight too.
