Hi All, With various conversations going on around the domain transfer and also the website, Geertjan suggested I start a topic here with a suggestion for handling redirects from https://netbeans.org to https://netbeans.apache.org This is all assuming, as discussed a while ago, that the apache.org address ends up as the primary domain for the project as a whole (at least some parts of the content is required to be hosted there).
In order that we don't lose the current content on https://netbeans.org while we wait for it to be migrated (it hasn't been donated yet!), Oracle will have to continue hosting the old site for a while. I suggested that Oracle also make it accessible at https://old.netbeans.org. Then we can put a permanent redirect from https://netbeans.org to https://netbeans.apache.org (as well as from www.netbeans.org), hopefully leaving the various other subdomains functioning correctly and independently (https certificates could be a problem here?) On the https://netbeans.apache.org side we then do a blanket temporary redirect for all missing pages (404s) to the same path on https://old.netbeans.org As we migrate content or decide to override pages, our pages on Apache infra should then take precedence. And that should hopefully mean that all existing inbound links continue to work, Google updates the links to netbeans.apache.org without spidering old.netbeans.org, and world peace breaks out .. :-) OK, so does this work or what are the potential flaws I've overlooked? First step would seem to be Oracle ensuring the site is accessible and works correctly from old.netbeans.org without accessing any resources from the base domain (otherwise we'll get fun redirect loops!)? And the funky code that leads to the interesting place https://www.netbeans.org goes may need to be looked at!? Any thoughts, or back to the drawing board?
