I don't know what API it should be but I get a visual notification when I 
missed a call, when I got a new sms or a new mail with most Android roms I've 
used, on some of them I can even customize the led colors. I find it helpful 
and as a user I wish b2g should inherit led signals if possible or even get 
creative about it.
