With what I downloaded yesterday, yes. Maybe I should try to download
today’s nightly, and try again, or version 3.0.

|adb devices| still lists the device when it hangs during flashing,
but the device became unresponsive and the battery has to be removed
to reboot it.

Exactly, it’s like that. In fact, after it failed, right away I can
flash again, and occasionally it then gets a little further. But I never
got it to complete.

I repeated the process of flashing v188 several times, with the
different cables, as mentioned.

There are people who succeed into flashing the v188 base image and 2.2 gecko+gaia, e.g. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1130725

So it's not a general issue.

I flash from a Xubuntu VM and don't know if its USB drivers or USB storage mounting could interfer with that.
