VirtualBox could indeed be the culprit. Just did a quick web search,
and [found][1]:

“The only caveat I would add is VirtualBox does not support USB devices
on the guest OS as well as VMware.

The company I work for make test equipment and one of my co-workers has
to test the USB drivers we supply for this equipment under a range of
operating systems; he says VirtualBox is useless for this but he can use
VMware.”

I may try VMware Player. Microsoft Virtual PC is also an option, but
it doesn't seem to support Linux as well.
