More background on recent focus on improving sync onboarding. Back last year with Cheng Wang’s help we embedded a survey link on our account verification page (a snippet).
We wanted to see if just-registered users had a good understanding of the benefits of Sync. Here was the survey: http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/1669837/Firefox-Accounts <http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/1669837/Firefox-Accounts> We included some good responses (I want sync), some bad (I want backup, I share a PC, It just need to) and even a none of the above option. Here are the basic results: Why did you choose to set up a Firefox Account? (multiple choice) 39.11% – I’m looking to sync Firefox information between multiple desktop/laptop computers 53.67% – I'm looking to sync Firefox information between my computer(s) and mobile device(s) 24.14% – I'm looking to use Firefox Sync to back up information for a single device 11.21% – I'd like to set up multiple Firefox accounts for different people in my family 20.00% – I thought I needed to do it to use Firefox 19.42% – I was just curious 12.03% – Something else (these responses were 80% insane) We know that the marketing initiatives are the primary driver of accounts. Ideally we can bring in loads of people, but for the right reasons. Users who expect good backup or multi-user UX will be disappointed (or worse). And it's concerning to me that 20% of users think that it's required (does it repel users from the browser?). According to Cheng, only 70% of the respondents checked either of the first two sync options, which leaves lots of room for improvement.
