1. Yes. Imagine you mixed russian, german and letin characters in language file ..

2. When you mark UTF-8 checkbox setup does this:

ALTER SCHEMA CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_general_ci
   set names 'utf8'
   set character_set_database=utf8
   SET CHARACTER SET latin1
   SET CHARACTER_SET_CONNECTION = utf8
   SET character_set_results = utf8
   SET character_set_server = utf8

in case you do not check:

ALTER SCHEMA CHARACTER SET latin1 COLLATE latin1_general_ci
   SET CHARACTER SET latin1

3. we provide migration to utf-8 script (no script to move back). More info is here:

Subject: Re: [oxid-dev-general] Translating OXID UI to other languages

Hi all,

A few more questions:

1. If charset=UTF-8 is defined in the language file, is it still necessary to install the shop in UTF-8 mode?

2. What exactly does the 'install in UTF-8 mode' flag do?

3. For shops that are not installed in this way, is there a way for them to 'turn it on' at a later date instead of having to reinstall the entire product?

Thanks,

Vikram

Hi Arvydas and Marco

I reinstalled the shop in UTF-8 mode and cleared the tmp/ directory. The
problem still exists.

I am attaching the lang.php file zipped, also two screenshots which show
the contents of the file displaying correctly in a UTF8 editor but
corrupted in Firefox.

Please let me know any ideas you have. Thanks.

Subject: [oxid-dev-general] Translating OXID UI to other languages

Hi all

I am putting together a short how-to on how to create multi-language
translations for the OXID UI. Based on my research, the steps are as
follows:

1. Add a language through the admin module
2. Create the lang/cust_lang files in the out/basic/XX directory

Is this correct?

As an example, I tried translating the front page into Hindi (an Indian language). Despite adding the strings to the lang.php file and saving as
Unicode, OXID displays garbled text (see screenshot). When I check the
language file in a text editor, the strings are saved correctly.

I am using Windows Notepad and Wordpad to save the file in Unicode
format. When I use UTF-8, the page does not even show the corrupted
text, it only displays the idents.

Can someone advise what I am doing wrong? I am using OXID CE 4.1.2_18998.

Vikram
