Hello, we also run in problems caused by this bug. As Daniel wrote it's not only a migration problem. We made a normal shop installation (no UTF-8) everything seems to work fine. But when we try to assign products to category or use other assignments like crossselling in shop admin no entries are shown in popup.
The reason are functions in oxajax.php using iconv when shop is not in utf-8 mode (_outputResponse(),_getFilter()). This doesn't work when default database connection was set to UTF-8 and shop was in "normal" mode (no UTF-8). So I think introduce a variable for "SET NAMES" instruction in config.inc.php will be a good idea until there is a new db-layer. In our case we choose to install the shop in UTF-8 mode. Not necessarily: characters are shown incorrectly when they are saved or imported in the wrong charset. If they are saved correctly they are also shown correctly. Additionally I want to add: since PHP 5.2.3 and MySQL 5.0.7 it is a safer approach to set the charset by using mysql_set_charset($yourCharset). See: http://php.net/manual/de/function.mysql-set-charset.php The used version of adodb lite is outdated and doesn't know about mysql_set_charset(). Imho Eric's proposal from the Oxid Commons for a new db-layer should be conducted rather soon than later.
