+1 on doing WebExt APIs in parallel - this can be done outside of
mozilla-central on non-release channels using WebExtension Experiments
(https://webextensions-experiments.readthedocs.io)

Once the implementation in mozilla-central is settled down, the
experimental API can be merged.
