As of ~now I intend to turn support for the inert attribute on by default on all platforms. It has been developed behind the html5.inert.enabled preference. It's shipping in other browsers already.

Thanks to Igalia for contributing the initial implementation of this feature in <https://bugzil.la/1655722>.

Bug: https://bugzil.la/1764263
Spec: https://html.spec.whatwg.org/#the-inert-attribute
Standards Body: WHATWG
Platform Coverage: All
DevTools bug: N/A (maybe we could expose inert roots with a bubble or something?) Standards position: https://github.com/mozilla/standards-positions/issues/174 Other browsers: Both other engines are shipping this. This has taken us rather long because of debate about what the right a11y tree semantics of inert should be, see <https://bugzil.la/1767561>.

Cheers,
