I don't really agree with you, I'm afraid. :-) We should not display this information for non-EV certificates (as I believe you wanted) because we can't guarantee it's correct.
I think it's a good idea not because IE does it (Opera does it as well) but because one of the key points of EV is to make the data in that field more reliable, such that it can be displayed to users with confidence.
As you keep saying, EV means "we know who you are", not "you are trustworthy". Therefore, it makes sense to display that knowledge.
