Of course this "artificial problem" is just the simplified code of a "real-life" application, reduced to surround the problem as much as possible to make it easy for you to find the bug. I don't think that a crash after about 500 iterations is a problem that is "artifical". For me, it's definitve "mission critical" on my API-projects.
