Just picking up one of your points here... On Fri, 06 Jun 2008 11:04:54 +0200, "Thomas N." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> said: > (BTW it's very hard in issuezilla to find the key > issues among the thousands of minor or outdated issues, but this could > be fixed, hopefully.)
Issues are assigned importance using the priority field. As I understand it, the P1 and P2 issues are the 'key' issues. They can easily be searched for, and there are currently only 10 defects & 14 features. Defects: http://argouml.tigris.org/issues/buglist.cgi?Submit+query=Submit+query&issue_type=DEFECT&issue_status=NEW&issue_status=STARTED&issue_status=REOPENED&priority=P1&priority=P2 Features: http://argouml.tigris.org/issues/buglist.cgi?Submit+query=Submit+query&issue_type=FEATURE&issue_status=NEW&issue_status=STARTED&issue_status=REOPENED&priority=P1&priority=P2 Perhaps we could hyperlink from the developer zone page to these two links. I do think we need something to 'break the new developers in' gently. We need to build up their patience with the project rather than overloading them on the first day. I believe that most OSS developers (whether they are 'feature hacking' or 'framework updating') are motivated by personal satisfaction, and they need to be able to make simple contributions that make a positive difference, without getting too deep, initially at least. I eluded to this in another mail earlier this year (see point 6.) http://argouml.tigris.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=dev&msgNo=21646 To make this happen, I think it needs someone to take it on as their own responsibility to manage the 'new intake' process. This person would need to regularly look at the website, instructions and tools, from the point of view of a new developer, making the process as slick as possible. What I'm talking about is something like: http://www.mozilla.org/ http://www.mozilla.org/developer/ http://www.mozilla.org/contribute/ In the mozilla example, with two clicks from the home page, I'm at an easy to understand section, with simple instructions on how to contribute, from short tasks to much longer ones. The style is suitable for someone with no prior knowledge of the project.
