I'm warming to the idea that the field default is only used when there writer
had no such field, and the enum default is used when the writer had an enum but
with a symbol that's no longer present. I'd also be fine if one default were
used for both purposes.
It sounds like we have designs that at least a couple of us find acceptable.
Now we just need an implementation...
