Andreas Martens (and others involved in OpenOffice Bibliography development);

My name is James Stevenson, and I'm contacting you regarding participation in the "Summer of Code" mentoring program offered by Google. Specifically, I'm interested in adding bibliographic features to OpenOffice, and was actually planning on submitting a proposal to work on this functionality before I noticed it was listed as a potential project. I would like to add not only integration with other bibliography programs, but also built-in formatting functionality. As a student, I don't own or use bibliography software, although I've used the university's web based tool, RefWorks (which from a user interface perspective is still clunky). While being able to import from other sources is important, I believe it would also greatly benefit students to be able to perform these functions inside OpenOffice.

I am a computer science student at Brigham Young University in my senior year, and will be starting graduate work soon. My cumulative GPA is 3.85. I've been employed for the past year as an intern at IBM developing applications with Lotus Notes and maintaining a department Domino server. I work from home, and so am used to self-driven development from home. I have a special interest in desiging good, usable software. The software I develop is in use by about 200 people, and directly helps them support large clients such as American Express. Starting from 1999, I've had jobs designing internet applications using Perl and MySQL, including a summer extensively modifying the Slashdot template for use by Alaskan parents and educators. I'm attaching my resume if you would like more details on my qualifications.

I realize the application deadline is quickly approaching, so please let me know if you would be willing to mentor me in this project. There are also a couple of other projects that interest me:
     1) Theasaurus: "Design and build code that will combine information on prefixes and suffixes" -- My wife graduates in August with a degree in linguistics, and from her I've gained a special interest in language parsing, and will probably enter graduate school with an emphasis in natural language processing. This project would interest me very much.
    2) Although it's not really much of a coding project, I would enjoy developing templates for OpenOffice, as I see a need for good templates for new users. I personally dislike Microsoft's PowerPoint presentations (some of them are kind of ugly) and would like to develop extensive, good looking, practical, templates for OpenOffice. It would encourage new users to start using the program, because they could quickly get started using it. First impressions mean a lot for new users!

Thank you very much for your consideration!
James Stevenson
