i think most everywhere uses TLSv1 now, else it won't work with IBM JDK.
if we find something that doesn't then we can test a comma-separated string
here (also testing w softlayer). in case we need a workaround we can disable
this behaviour via system properties.
that feels like the best way for now but @grkvlt would appreciate your
feedback on this.
