For my two cents I really like https://zulipchat.com/
Its really common for rust projects, its open source unlike slack, it
has logs, unlike most irc channels, it tries a lot harder than irc to
mange `abuse` both spam and blocking those who do not follow community
rules.
This https://zulipchat.com/why-zulip/ gives a nice overview of zulips
differences to IRC/Slack
I really like how it dose `threads`, in slack you can reply to
individual post but it can be hard to find the individual posts but with
zulip there are many easy ways to filter, eg, all messages, one "stream"
or just a sub thread, "topic", with all the sub-threads recorded and
searchable.
Over all it means you can just filter down to the topic you are engaged
in and not have to try and work out if others are chatting to you or
someone else but you can always just have the allmessage filter and see
everything as if it was IRC for when you are just generally following along.
I think its well worth considering although I know others have very firm
views on this topic.
