The only issue with #2 is the amount of work that it would require for an
unknown amount of payoff. If we wanted #2 I think I'd rather pay a GSOC person
to rewrite some of the core bits to make #2 (and lots of other things easier)
so that the focus is on the "make easier part" rather than just hack enough to
get ubjson on disk.
