In the end I did find a way to make the editor fit more nicely (fixed set
of lines displayed is displayed, scroll follows cursor w/out hacks, scroll is
always there, etc.)
It goes down into ACE a little more deeply, but should be manageable
nonetheless (a toast to prototype-based languages ;-) )
