IRC log follows:

## Preface ##
## CouchDB 2.0 ##
[Wed May 13 19:02:40 2015] <Kxepal>: ok, so what about CouchDB 2.0 status...
[Wed May 13 19:03:17 2015] <Kxepal>: working is moving on forward, slowly, but
with the progress.
[Wed May 13 19:03:37 2015] <Kxepal>: but we need to figure what to do with the
_config endpoint for cluster interface
[Wed May 13 19:04:25 2015] <Kxepal>: even after removing it causes broken user
experience and without any solution we're going back to the dark ages where you
have to restart a server in order to apply the config changes. not cool.
[Wed May 13 19:05:00 2015] <Kxepal>: there were several proposals on dev@ ML
about how to handle it, but no specifics yet
[Wed May 13 19:05:23 2015] <Kxepal>: if anyone has a thoughts and/or proposals
- all welcome!
[Wed May 13 19:06:17 2015] <jan____>: I have no other proposals, but i’d like
to keep talking the route that rnewson brought up
[Wed May 13 19:06:35 2015] <Kxepal>: personally, I also took investigation of
this issue. will finish my paperwork during the week. it wouldn't work, but
hope it will help to figure something better.
[Wed May 13 19:06:51 2015] <Kxepal>: jan____: which route?
[Wed May 13 19:07:16 2015] <jan____>: Kxepal: thinking about using a database
for config values
[Wed May 13 19:07:28 2015] <Kxepal>: jan____: yes. that's a goal.
[Wed May 13 19:07:44 2015] <jan____>: cool
[Wed May 13 19:08:12 2015] <Kxepal>: iirc we start dream to have this for a
long time.
[Wed May 13 19:08:15 2015] <Kxepal>: *ago
[Wed May 13 19:09:55 2015] <jan____>: right, I think the discussion about this
can go on on dev@, looking forward to your investigation results
[Wed May 13 19:09:57 2015] <Kxepal>: #info we're looking for proposals about
how to implement clustered /_config interface. send yours to dev@ ML - all
welcome!
[Wed May 13 19:10:42 2015] <Kxepal>: jan____: sure. it's complicated topic for
irc.
[Wed May 13 19:11:27 2015] <jan____>: cool, thanks!
[Wed May 13 19:11:35 2015] <Kxepal>: so far that's all for the new biggest
blockers of 2.0
[Wed May 13 19:11:56 2015] <jan____>: other than that, I’m still noodling on
the build script, but it’s going slowly
[Wed May 13 19:12:03 2015] <jan____>: and I still need help with windows
[Wed May 13 19:12:24 2015] <Kxepal>: jan____: btw, what's the best way to send
you an updates? I made a few.
[Wed May 13 19:12:26 2015] <jan____>: #info Jan needs help with a Windows
version of https://github.com/apache/couchdb/pull/302
[Wed May 13 19:12:56 2015] <jan____>: Kxepal: send a PR to my fork
[Wed May 13 19:13:04 2015] <Kxepal>: jan____: ok
[Wed May 13 19:13:25 2015] <robertkowalski>: fauxton can detect if we are
running on a bakcdoorport now
[Wed May 13 19:13:53 2015] <Kxepal>: so moving to fauxton then?(:
## Fauxton ##
[Wed May 13 19:14:21 2015] <Kxepal>: robertkowalski, michellep floor is yours (:
[Wed May 13 19:14:26 2015] <robertkowalski>: no it is 2.0 related -- i talked
to several folks and came to the opinion that sending folks to fauxton backdoor
port, let them search for the shard-db and then click "compact view" is not
feasible
[Wed May 13 19:15:18 2015] <Kxepal>: robertkowalski: it's still very
complicated /:
[Wed May 13 19:15:49 2015] <Kxepal>: but hope we deal with it for 2.1
[Wed May 13 19:16:04 2015] <robertkowalski>: yes, in 2.0 we have to somehow
explain this workflow to a user - in my opnion it is not feasible for users
[Wed May 13 19:16:54 2015] <jan____>: the problem is that we don’t want to
trigger a compaction in the whole cluster?
[Wed May 13 19:17:18 2015] <Kxepal>: jan____: right
[Wed May 13 19:17:40 2015] <robertkowalski>: jan____: couch 1 has a feature/api
just to compact view xy
[Wed May 13 19:17:42 2015] <Kxepal>: thought, we have ioq, but not sure if it
cluster wide. iirc just node wide
[Wed May 13 19:18:21 2015] <robertkowalski>: in addition to "compact database"
which is database wide
[Wed May 13 19:18:31 2015] <jan____>: robertkowalski: you mean ddoc x/y?
[Wed May 13 19:18:37 2015] <robertkowalski>: jan____: yes
[Wed May 13 19:19:14 2015] <robertkowalski>: jan____: i think it is
/mydatabase/_compact/viewname
[Wed May 13 19:19:22 2015] <jan____>: right, the cluster interface in 2.0 just
doesn’t have this because it is a node-maintenance operation, right?
[Wed May 13 19:19:39 2015] <jan____>: robertkowalski: ddocname
[Wed May 13 19:19:51 2015] <jan____>: views don’t have individual indexes,
ddocs have
[Wed May 13 19:19:51 2015] <Kxepal>: jan____: yes.
[Wed May 13 19:20:10 2015] <jan____>: it might be /db/_design/name/_compact,
but yeah, same thing
[Wed May 13 19:20:32 2015] <jan____>: either way, the problem is we don’t
want compacting on all nodes in parallel
[Wed May 13 19:21:29 2015] <jan____>: could we make it so that we still expose,
say /db/_design/name/_compact on the cluster interface, but the endpoint is
smart enough to trigger this on all shards in sequence?
[Wed May 13 19:21:56 2015] <jan____>: error scenarios are a bit hairy, e.g. if
a node fails, what to do, etc, but maybe we can just report an error and the
end user can start over
[Wed May 13 19:21:57 2015] <Kxepal>: jan____: I think we can.
[Wed May 13 19:22:03 2015] <jan____>: might be too complicated tho
[Wed May 13 19:22:22 2015] <jan____>: is this a thing we want to fix in 2.0? or
can this wait until 2.1?
[Wed May 13 19:22:29 2015] <Kxepal>: but yes, in case of failure there would be
no feedback except error in logs
[Wed May 13 19:23:27 2015] <robertkowalski>: we can remove the feature from
fauxton
[Wed May 13 19:23:31 2015] <Kxepal>: jan____: depending on the time we have
till 2.0. I want to, but for now I have enough of tasks to care about.
[Wed May 13 19:23:37 2015] <robertkowalski>: we would also have to remove it
from the docs, right?
[Wed May 13 19:23:48 2015] <jan____>: we have no time for 2.0
[Wed May 13 19:24:01 2015] <Kxepal>: then 2.1 is nobody else handle this
problem.
[Wed May 13 19:24:44 2015] <Kxepal>: robertkowalski: if compaction wouldn't
work for cluster interface, fauxton has no reason to show buttons for broken
featuers.
[Wed May 13 19:24:47 2015] <Kxepal>: *features
[Wed May 13 19:25:23 2015] <Kxepal>: or show them, but tell what users actually
have to do in order to use that features.
[Wed May 13 19:25:40 2015] <Kxepal>: btw, this might be a better way to go
instead of hiding things.
[Wed May 13 19:25:54 2015] <jan____>: I think it would make sense to come up
with a list of the 2.0 API that makes a differentiation of which things are on
the cluster interface and which ones are node-local
[Wed May 13 19:26:04 2015] <Kxepal>: at leasts, users won't think that we
removed completely config, compactions, stats etc.
[Wed May 13 19:26:12 2015] <robertkowalski>: great idea jan____
[Wed May 13 19:26:35 2015] <robertkowalski>: count me in, as i have to deal
with some things for fauxton
[Wed May 13 19:26:40 2015] <Kxepal>: jan____: that list very soon be on docs.
[Wed May 13 19:27:02 2015] <robertkowalski>: jan____: actionitem: i will create
a google doc?
[Wed May 13 19:27:20 2015] <jan____>: from that list, we know what will be
available in fauxton and what not, and then we know what docs to write for
people who upgrade
[Wed May 13 19:27:27 2015] <jan____>: robertkowalski: +1
[Wed May 13 19:27:47 2015] <michellep>: i agree, having a list helps
[Wed May 13 19:29:41 2015] <michellep>: i have some more fauxton updates :
[Wed May 13 19:29:43 2015] <michellep>: :D
[Wed May 13 19:29:56 2015] <jan____>: go! :)
[Wed May 13 19:31:45 2015] <michellep>: sebastianrothbucher did a great job,
and he got to merge in the conversion of the front page from backbone.js to
react.js this week
[Wed May 13 19:32:13 2015] <michellep>: we were really tough on him, but he
pulled through like a super champ
[Wed May 13 19:32:18 2015] <jan____>: niiiice
[Wed May 13 19:32:33 2015] <michellep>: it's the front page!
[Wed May 13 19:32:40 2015] <michellep>: really exciting
[Wed May 13 19:33:17 2015] <michellep>: i am also working an importer for
fauxton
[Wed May 13 19:33:33 2015] <michellep>:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/COUCHDB-2681
[Wed May 13 19:33:45 2015] <michellep>:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/attachment/12732648/fauxton-loader-v5.pdf
[Wed May 13 19:34:08 2015] <michellep>: so i'm getting feedback from a couple
of people at a time, and there seems to be two camps
[Wed May 13 19:34:43 2015] <Kxepal>: what camps?
[Wed May 13 19:34:57 2015] <michellep>: the first camp, likes the crazy magic,
and would like the importer to be one page, just drag-drop-and-go
[Wed May 13 19:34:58 2015] <Kxepal>: one I know (:
[Wed May 13 19:35:10 2015] <jan____>: ooooh nice!
[Wed May 13 19:35:16 2015] <michellep>: :) i am also of this camp
[Wed May 13 19:35:44 2015] <michellep>: the second camp: would like the
importer to walk people through the process, step by step
[Wed May 13 19:36:15 2015] <jan____>: classic application for the
simple/advanced pattern
[Wed May 13 19:36:24 2015] <michellep>: i am of the first camp! but i wonder if
there could be a compromise
[Wed May 13 19:36:55 2015] <jan____>: we can build the advanced version later,
maybe even have a lightweight version of google refine in there, so you can
filter your data before it gets inserted etc.
[Wed May 13 19:37:19 2015] <Kxepal>: every web seo will say you that step by
step things is a thing of past days. no steps is what we have now in trend.
[Wed May 13 19:37:28 2015] <jan____>: I think the magic version is what we
should go for first, we can make it more complicated later and hide the more
complicated version behind an “advanced” button
[Wed May 13 19:37:43 2015] <jan____>: 1. magic import
[Wed May 13 19:37:47 2015] <jan____>: 2. there is no step 2
[Wed May 13 19:37:53 2015] <jan____>: 3. Profit
[Wed May 13 19:38:01 2015] <michellep>: lol :D
[Wed May 13 19:38:38 2015] <michellep>: ok i will go and argue with the second
camp for the case of magic
[Wed May 13 19:38:51 2015] <michellep>: i think maybe if they see it, use it,
they will agree
[Wed May 13 19:39:27 2015] <jan____>: well, since you are building this, the
complicated camp can maybe do their implementation :D
[Wed May 13 19:39:33 2015] <michellep>: maybe the pdf's don't convey what's
going on really well, and once the actual working thing will make them change
their mind
[Wed May 13 19:39:38 2015] <michellep>: hahaha
[Wed May 13 19:39:50 2015] <Wohali>: michellep: ugh, wizards are awful
[Wed May 13 19:39:56 2015] <Wohali>: there, that is another opinion
[Wed May 13 19:40:11 2015] <Wohali>: whoever wants a wizard spent too much time
using CSV import in Excel
[Wed May 13 19:40:38 2015] <jan____>: indeed!
[Wed May 13 19:41:02 2015] <Kxepal>: Wohali: excel uses wizard to open csv?
[Wed May 13 19:41:10 2015] <jan____>: (which default to
semicolon-separated-values, even though it is called CSV, but that’s beside
the point)
[Wed May 13 19:41:40 2015] <Kxepal>: ACTION /o\
[Wed May 13 19:41:57 2015] <Wohali>: yes, it has a 4-pane wizard to "preview"
the data import
[Wed May 13 19:42:04 2015] <Wohali>: so you can be convinced it's doing "the
right thing"
[Wed May 13 19:42:20 2015] <michellep>: ^^ people find that comforting
[Wed May 13 19:42:38 2015] <jan____>: we can do that later :)
[Wed May 13 19:42:46 2015] <michellep>: haha :) ok
[Wed May 13 19:44:13 2015] <jan____>: Thanks michellep!
[Wed May 13 19:44:26 2015] <michellep>: welcome :D
[Wed May 13 19:44:37 2015] <robertkowalski>: cool thank you!
[Wed May 13 19:44:45 2015] <michellep>: :D
## free talks ##
[Wed May 13 19:46:18 2015] <Kxepal>: anything else for today?
[Wed May 13 19:47:07 2015] <robertkowalski>: do you remember
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/couchdb-marketing/201503.mbox/%3CCADA9kr87BGBonAh1e9RyHng6DpULZNOhYgFKnJ9n4OfHOoc4AQ%40mail.gmail.com%3E
 ?
## Marketing business ##
[Wed May 13 19:47:30 2015] <Kxepal>: #link
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/couchdb-marketing/201503.mbox/%3CCADA9kr87BGBonAh1e9RyHng6DpULZNOhYgFKnJ9n4OfHOoc4AQ%40mail.gmail.com%3E
[Wed May 13 19:47:49 2015] <Kxepal>: robertkowalski: sure I do (:
[Wed May 13 19:47:51 2015] <robertkowalski>: i am currently in contact with
several companies
[Wed May 13 19:48:00 2015] <Kxepal>: wow! great!
[Wed May 13 19:48:15 2015] <robertkowalski>: the idea is to create something
like http://hapijs.com/community (scroll a bit down)
[Wed May 13 19:48:37 2015] <robertkowalski>: and start with a few ones and then
call for pull requests / submissions in other ways
[Wed May 13 19:48:55 2015] <jan____>: yeah yeah yeah!
[Wed May 13 19:48:55 2015] <robertkowalski>: because that is something i can do
in my after hours timewise
[Wed May 13 19:49:17 2015] <jan____>: yeah, easy maintenance and HUGE impact
[Wed May 13 19:49:24 2015] <robertkowalski>: yep!
[Wed May 13 19:49:52 2015] <robertkowalski>: if you know companies please join
me
[Wed May 13 19:50:04 2015] <robertkowalski>: or intrduce me to them :)
[Wed May 13 19:50:42 2015] <jan____>: do you need more for the launch?
[Wed May 13 19:51:01 2015] <robertkowalski>: just a few company testimonials,
maybe also hoodie?
[Wed May 13 19:51:26 2015] <jan____>: I can contribute: hood.ie,
neighbourhood.ie, minutes.io at least, definitely a bunch more that I can ask
[Wed May 13 19:51:36 2015] <robertkowalski>: wow!!!
[Wed May 13 19:51:51 2015] <jan____>: let’s get the site up and PR process
going, then I can fill these in
[Wed May 13 19:52:01 2015] <jan____>: so we can test the workflow and messaging
and everything
[Wed May 13 19:52:22 2015] <jan____>: once we have a bunch, we tweet about it
and add it to the weekly news etc.
[Wed May 13 19:52:53 2015] <robertkowalski>: ok. from the three companies i
asked i have nothing yet but i just started this week and they want to ping back
[Wed May 13 19:53:27 2015] <Kxepal>: robertkowalski: am I get your idea right
is that to have the same community list with feedback on our couchdb website?
[Wed May 13 19:54:33 2015] <robertkowalski>: Kxepal: yes
[Wed May 13 19:54:53 2015] <Kxepal>: great!
[Wed May 13 19:54:55 2015] <Kxepal>: ACTION slow
[Wed May 13 19:54:58 2015] <robertkowalski>: the same like on that hapijs page
but not for hapi but for couchdb in production
[Wed May 13 19:55:11 2015] <Kxepal>: robertkowalski: yes, that would be great!
[Wed May 13 19:55:20 2015] <jan____>: robertkowalski: we can even put apple on
it, now that they ship xcode server with CouchDB (just shouldn’t use their
logo)
[Wed May 13 19:55:31 2015] <jan____>: source:
http://honzadvorsky.com/blog/2015/5/4/under-the-hood-of-xcode-server
[Wed May 13 19:55:56 2015] <Kxepal>: jan____: why shouldn't use their logo?
[Wed May 13 19:56:06 2015] <robertkowalski>: i think i even have a contact at
apple!
[Wed May 13 19:56:18 2015] <robertkowalski>: will ping him tonight after the
meeting
[Wed May 13 19:56:18 2015] <jan____>: Kxepal: they are particular about that
[Wed May 13 19:56:30 2015] <jan____>: robertkowalski: I have plenty, but that
won’t give us permission
[Wed May 13 19:56:45 2015] <Kxepal>: jan____: hm..ok
[Wed May 13 19:57:04 2015] <jan____>: we can just quote something from the
article, or a plain statement, it’s a big thing as is, we won’t get a
statement out of apple
[Wed May 13 19:57:27 2015] <robertkowalski>: jan____: i would like to have a
sentence why companies love couchdb like on that hapi.js-community page
[Wed May 13 19:57:54 2015] <Kxepal>: jan____: I think robertkowalski could have
a try. it cost nothing, but may be he'll be lucky.
[Wed May 13 19:58:06 2015] <robertkowalski>: jan____: do you think of a
separate page or part of this page where we list users without any statement?
[Wed May 13 19:58:14 2015] <jan____>: robertkowalski: yeah, I get it, Apple
won’t do that
[Wed May 13 19:58:23 2015] <jan____>: Kxepal: I have tried, plenty of times,
company policy
[Wed May 13 19:58:31 2015] <jan____>: they use CouchDB in quite a few places
[Wed May 13 19:58:44 2015] <Kxepal>: too sad ):
[Wed May 13 19:59:10 2015] <michellep>: we could have a picture of an apple
[Wed May 13 19:59:13 2015] <jan____>: robertkowalski: good thinking, I think
the front page could use a “used by these big brand names” type of thing
[Wed May 13 19:59:19 2015] <jan____>: hahaha
[Wed May 13 19:59:49 2015] <jan____>: maybe apple fits there better, and the
community page is only for companies and projects who send a quote
[Wed May 13 20:00:05 2015] <jan____>: no need to design this to death now,
let’s go with robertkowalski’s proposal and see where it leads us :)
[Wed May 13 20:00:18 2015] <robertkowalski>: jan____: cool, i'm in but need
design help (as always) - topic for marketing@?
[Wed May 13 20:00:39 2015] <jan____>: robertkowalski: or www@ :)
[Wed May 13 20:01:02 2015] <robertkowalski>: jan____: ok
## Meeting Time ##
[Wed May 13 20:02:12 2015] <jan____>: we started the meeting during summer time
and we didn’t adjust for winter time last time around, so we are now at
UTC+2. I’d like to propose to move the meeting back to summer time (UTC+1)
[Wed May 13 20:02:48 2015] <Kxepal>: jan____: we have it 19:00 UTC, no DST
[Wed May 13 20:02:49 2015] <jan____>: (I might get the history slightly wrong,
but the end result is the same, start this an hour earlier)
[Wed May 13 20:03:07 2015] <Kxepal>: what's the adjustment have to be?
[Wed May 13 20:03:15 2015] <robertkowalski>: i am +1 it is now 22:00 here
[Wed May 13 20:03:20 2015] <jan____>: we talked about this last time, but we
didn’t move on it. if there are no objections, we’ll do the next one at
[Wed May 13 20:03:26 2015] <jan____>: Kxepal: right, that’s the problem
[Wed May 13 20:03:32 2015] <jan____>: “one hour earlier”
[Wed May 13 20:03:48 2015] <Wohali>: one hour earlier is fine
[Wed May 13 20:03:51 2015] <Kxepal>: timezones ARE the problem by default (:
[Wed May 13 20:03:57 2015] <Wohali>: that puts it at 2PM Eastern rather than 3PM
[Wed May 13 20:04:01 2015] <Kxepal>: so, 18:00 UTC?
[Wed May 13 20:04:03 2015] <Wohali>: which is the "old" time again
[Wed May 13 20:04:08 2015] <jan____>: Kxepal: word
[Wed May 13 20:04:10 2015] <Wohali>: correct
[Wed May 13 20:04:21 2015] <Wohali>: are we onto "other busienss" yet? i have
something
[Wed May 13 20:04:26 2015] <robertkowalski>: ok cool
[Wed May 13 20:04:30 2015] <Wohali>: i am going to attempt to take a look at
the windows build this wk
[Wed May 13 20:04:32 2015] <Wohali>: no promises.
[Wed May 13 20:04:36 2015] <robertkowalski>: btw jan____ www is not very active
btw - i got just responses from jan____ and Kxepal regarding my proposal for
the grid of cards
[Wed May 13 20:04:39 2015] <robertkowalski>: :(
[Wed May 13 20:04:46 2015] <Kxepal>: robertkowalski: indeed ):
[Wed May 13 20:04:50 2015] <jan____>: woah!
[Wed May 13 20:04:54 2015] <jan____>: <333
[Wed May 13 20:05:09 2015] <jan____>: robertkowalski: we need a new invite that
we are open for business now that we have couchdb-www
[Wed May 13 20:05:19 2015] <jan____>: robertkowalski: get jennmoneydollars
activated again ^^
[Wed May 13 20:05:29 2015] <Wohali>: jan____: you may not be happy after i get
done with it, shell dependencies + windows == bad news
[Wed May 13 20:05:56 2015] <Kxepal>: Wohali: that would be extremely helpful!
[Wed May 13 20:06:21 2015] <Kxepal>: Wohali: may be call Nick for help?
[Wed May 13 20:06:29 2015] <jan____>: Wohali: no worries, I assume a parallel
world with an easy switch at the top
[Wed May 13 20:07:06 2015] <Wohali>: i would prefer not to have any bash
dependencies on the windows platform build but who knows
[Wed May 13 20:07:44 2015] <jan____>: Wohali: yea, taht’s what I mean
[Wed May 13 20:07:55 2015] <Kxepal>: technically, for windows we could have own
configure.bat as it pretty trivial. not as it was in 1.x.
[Wed May 13 20:08:08 2015] <Kxepal>: all the other job is on rebar shoulders
[Wed May 13 20:13:40 2015] <robertkowalski>: so i had this idea because there
are so many ways to contribute to couchdb - i contacted ermouth which i knew
from his submission for the couchdb logo
[Wed May 13 20:14:06 2015] <robertkowalski>: this evening we finished the final
version with help from nolan from pouchdb
[Wed May 13 20:14:33 2015] <robertkowalski>: you can see it at
http://robertkowalski.github.io/couchdb-www/ and i will open a PR tonight or
tomorrow
[Wed May 13 20:14:45 2015] <robertkowalski>: it is in the "contribute" section

[Wed May 13 20:20:10 2015] <Kxepal>: #link
http://robertkowalski.github.io/couchdb-www/#contribute

thanks to DST!
[Wed May 13 20:22:29 2015] <Kxepal>: robertkowalski: just in time (:
[Wed May 13 20:22:48 2015] <robertkowalski>: jira permissions and logged out
users
[Wed May 13 20:23:20 2015] <robertkowalski>: i think it makes it hard for
people to start contributing that we currently have e.g. 120 fauxton issues
(component fauxton)
[Wed May 13 20:23:33 2015] <robertkowalski>: but when you are logged out you
see 7 very old ones
[Wed May 13 20:23:35 2015] <Kxepal>: robertkowalski: we have an issue on infra,
about. any progress there?
[Wed May 13 20:23:49 2015] <Kxepal>: or actually, changes.
[Wed May 13 20:24:02 2015] <robertkowalski>: i wanted to ask if anyone else has
an idea as i double checked our jira permissions
[Wed May 13 20:24:16 2015] <robertkowalski>:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-9418
[Wed May 13 20:25:18 2015] <Kxepal>: robertkowalski: I don't, but if it's not
our fault and we can do nothing with, then need call infra for help again.
[Wed May 13 20:26:52 2015] <Kxepal>: ok, I think we have a vector to dig for
solution.
[Wed May 13 20:26:59 2015] <Kxepal>: ASFBot: meeting end
