Which Java version did you have initially? The legacy Java 6 from Apple?

Did you install a JRE (Java Runtime Environment) or a JDK (Java Development 
Kit)? I think from java.com you only get a JRE which is not sufficient.

Both the Studio download page [1] and the FAQ [2] mention that a JDK is 
required. I'd recommend to install AdoptOpenJDK version 11 [3]. I'll update 
those sites to make it clearer.
