Hi Ger,

Perhaps I could add my 2c to this interesting exchange of ideas.

Could you explain one thing about these, please? I am missing the point
of having a card for something that I would guess is not done often. In
other words, why not an ordinary HOW-TO?

We already have an excellent 50-odd page more or less step-by-step tutorial / How-to on doing mailmerges, the idea behind the ref cards is to have something in a handy format useful for people who are already fairly confident with office suites in general, but just need a quick-ref guide like so many that are available for other competing office suites.

As to it not being done very often, I think on the contrary, it is, judging from the number of times the question comes up on the French user list, something that is done regularly in the French speaking arena, and at least for some users once a week. In certain administrations, for example, this functionality is used probably almost every day. Let us not forget that the French administration has led the way in mass migrating its users to OOo, and they are very dependent on functional mailmerge capabilities. Even in French business, where one might think that a mailmerge need only be done for sending standard circulars at, say, monthly intervals, it is obvious from the questions posed that this is indeed a very commonly used feature.
