I've been brushing up on Python too... it's really quite a nice language.

Unfortunately, at this point we don't have control over the rendering
settings described on that link.  We are not yet using a local server to
build the PDFs - we are using PediaPress' server.  I hope, in the next
couple months to be able to set up a local render server so we have more
control over the rendering options (there are some dependency issues
with the current software stack that limit me from installing the mwlib
stuff).
