Hi TJ,

Thank you very much for your invaluable insights into the world of
localization. I found enough information to fix the German documentation
on the wiki (although "symbol.src" does not list German as a language;
French, Swedish, Italian...).

Other names are localized as well, notably "jota/JOTA". It will take me
a while to compose a note for the English version of the Math Guide /
Writer Guide (unless someone beats me to it) to the effect that these
symbols (Greek and Special) may be localized, but the file itself will
be coded in a universal format.

Nowadays the localization to those (and any other string resource) can
be found in the project l10n. There is a sub directory for each locle,
and in that one there is a single huge filed named localize.sdf.

Thus if you want to check on the German localization of the symbol names
in Math you have to load the file
     l10n\source\de\localize.sdf
And in that you need to locate the define from the symbol.src, that is
the RID_UI_SYMBOL_NAMES. There is one entry with that define for every
en-US entry listed in symbols.src:

starmath source\symbol.src 0 itemlist RID_UI_SYMBOL_NAMES 1 0 de alpha
starmath source\symbol.src 0 itemlist RID_UI_SYMBOL_NAMES 2 0 de ALPHA
starmath source\symbol.src 0 itemlist RID_UI_SYMBOL_NAMES 3 0 de beta
starmath source\symbol.src 0 itemlist RID_UI_SYMBOL_NAMES 4 0 de BETA
starmath source\symbol.src 0 itemlist RID_UI_SYMBOL_NAMES 5 0 de gamma
...
starmath source\symbol.src 0 itemlist RID_UI_SYMBOL_NAMES 5 0 de mu
starmath source\symbol.src 0 itemlist RID_UI_SYMBOL_NAMES 5 0 de MU
...

The order of course is the same as in symbol.src.

Thomas

Thank you for the extra effort. I can see how busy you are with 3.3, from the feature announcements.

Opengrok was able to find symbol.src (current trunk, no German), binfilter/symbol.src (with German), and the de/localize.sdf (huge) files. I used those to make the changes. You can see the results in the last two sections on the wiki page:

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/DE/Dokumentation/OOo_2.x/Handb%C3%BCcher/Writer-Handbuch/Math-Befehlsverzeichnis

I had one small problem: both the .src and the .sdf files showed the string "grogegen" with the eszett entirely missing (no funny-looking character). Fortunately, my German-speaking user caught and fixed that. Assuming that the proper string is "großgegen", if this is not a known problem in Opengrok, somebody should look into it. (The problem might be in Firefox, but I doubt it.)
