The solutions for this are well defined...
1) write an EPS parser. The iText project has one in their library, which
has been functional enough for many "clip art class" graphics, that perhaps
we could leverage.
2) Send the EPS to Ghostscript for conversion to PDF, and then place the
PDF.
Certainly an important problem to solve...
Thought right now, I'd like to focus on getting what is already there of
higher quality (smaller files, no cruft, standards compliance). Once that
is resolved, then adding functionality along these lines would indeed be
worthwhile.
