Hi all, thanks for your responses and thanks Nick for adding me to that contributor role!
For context, I previously discussed Jira permissions with my colleague and saw that he was a part of both the "hbase" and "committers" groups on Jira and was able to manage assignments whereas I was not. I'm familiar with the term committer but figured that there may not be a one to one mapping of Jira roles to Github identities and had no visibility into what other groups/roles may exist. Ultimately as Charles mentioned, it's not super clear how a newcomer can gain access to these permissions. I did originally follow the ASF self-serve portal to create my Jira account before sending my first email and was thus able to create a ticket but couldn't manage its assignment after that; I wonder whether the self-serve route could be improved to automatically mark new Jira users as contributors for the projects they have selected. Regardless, I'm excited to start contributing and collaborating with you all!
