I guess it's a fine line between having the system work out of the box
for many users vs. having it work only after much configuration. I'm not
sure there's a good answer : if we'd left out the spell checkers, a
different group of users would have complained.

Interesting - can you configure them in the keyboard shortcuts option ?
Might be worth filing this as a bug on the project's issue tracking

You should be able to view the comments in a .po file using View->Source
