Hi all, I checked the archives and it looks like my messages didn't get into the mailing list. So, even if all it's already decided, I am going to summarize them in this message for documentation purposes, as I think my opinion is important in this thread.

On 10th August 2007, SIL International rejected the petition to incorporate qcv_ES into ISO 639-3 to identify Valencian as a separate language from Catalan, as you can read here: http://www.sil.org/iso639-3/cr_files/PastComments/CR_Comments_2006-129.pdf I am not very comfortable talking about politics in a software mailing list, and I even think it's quite sad that we have to do it, but the main reasons for the rejection were these ones: 1. The Language spoken in Catalonia, València, Andorra and the Balearic Islands is unique and understandable by all its users, as defended by the official Valencian organizations: Consell Valencià de Cultura CVC and Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua AVL. 2. The official statement of the Supreme Court of Spain is that even if Valencian and Catalan have different names, are the same language. So, should OOo use "qcv_ES" to identify Valencian? The answer is no. That's why BCP47/RFC5646 language tags exists. And I will be more than happy to use them to identify all the major dialects of Catalan, as I speak one of those dialects myself. As Eike said, OOo is incorporating qvc_ES as a reserved for local use locale, that means that anyone can use it for what they want. So I don't like, but I accept, someone privately using this "weird" (I am sorry, but it's) locale for the Valencian translation. My main concern is that modified version will be distributed, not officially from us, but the Generalitat Valenciana will put it in their servers and advice people to use it, not sure if they will have a lot of success, but time will tell. Everybody who uses OpenOffice.org in Valencia in their native language are using the official Catalan version now. What will happen when someone creates a document in "Valencian" and sends that document to a friend who is using the official OpenOffice.org build? Will he be able to open it as "Catalan" and work normally with it? Or this will create a series of incompatible documents for the Catalan speaking territories? I trust Eike and I am sure that him and the OpenOffice.org Community will do the right thing, but I don't trust the Valencian Government (when the ultra right party wins the elections). I am very afraid of their "private" build as I think it can harm our existing OpenOffice.org in all the Catalan speaking territories.
