I now have OOo 1.1.3, 1.1.4 and 1.9.95 on my machine, and if I open the dictionary file AU_medical.dic in any one of them, all entries are redlined.
is your paragraph in en_AU language ?
Has something changed in the dictionary setup which will not allow this simple hack? Is there a work-around?

Yes I just worked that out, Laurent, thanks. One of the most elementary errors. When I opened the .dic file, it (being plain text, I presume) had no language attributed.
Sorry for cluttering the list with garbage.
