Maybe I should not have hi-jacked someone else's thread! I know the 
definitions, what I should have asked was more ...
 
What are the advantages/disadvantages of using application scope vs. request 
scope (with the request scope variables being set in application.cfm, so that 
they are valid for all requests) ?

Request is for variables that are valid for that request.
