thanks for your help! I had to (due to time) find the file manually. I tried
your regexp, but it found zero results...even when i removed the closing
comment tag search. Maybe I am doing it wrong still (wouldn't surprise me with
regex), but even using
(?!<!--- .*)<cfdump
found zero results. even though I have fixed my problem, I would still like
to know how you can do this for future ref, to see if there are any more files
with open <cfdump in them, and so i can start to get my head around regex!

I haven't tested exhaustively, but this passes both your specified
tests:
(?!<!---.*)<cfdump var="[^"]+">(?!.*--->)
You'd have to tweak it a bit to work with multi-lined comment blocks.
