it works! FYI: - 1) switched to a named instance 2) used port 1466 (ensured port in Network client, client connect & regedit) 3) installed SQL2000 SP4 4) added hostfile entry 5) installed security tools http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9552d43b-04eb-4af9-9e24-6cde4d933600&displaylang=en I didn't check to see if installation was working after step 4 - but somewhere between 4 & 5 it started working. CFIDE now successfully connects to NORTHWIND Thx for all previous assistance once again, I am now going to leave the office & run down the street wearing Archimedes bath robe! Thx to all that have responded. After my 7th attempt in getting this work I have come to the conclusion that its not worth any more hassle & time to take up yoga. RANT: There is like 7 different solutions to the problem & though I do not profess to be a SQL infrastructure whizz - why can it just not WORK! WHY do they have to break something that was working!
