The solution to this is explained in depth on Charlie Aienhart's (spelling??) blog - sorry don;t have the link handy. Essentially you need to enable TCP/IP for your named instance SQL Server 'cos by default this is not installed. Refer to the link below, though this is for J2EE servers, the screenshots are the same for CF.
