In case you have the same problem with MS SQL2000this is usually due to SP4
being applied. You will need both a hostfile entry for your named instance &
add it to your client network utility.
I recently re-installed my dev environment & it took the best part of 3 days
to get MS SQL2000 working. 2005 was the doddle - go figure!

yes, TCP/IP was turned off by default.

Essentially you need to enable TCP/IP for your named instance SQL Server
'cos by default this is not installed.
Refer to the link below, though this is for J2EE servers, the screenshots
are the same for CF.
