Instead of creating/deleting multiple scheduled tasks, you could just use the 
Sleep function, and redirect back to your page passing a url parameter for 
where to start at.

Probably doesn't help your SMTP problem though.

Snake, I hear what you're saying about splitting it into multiple staggered
requests. That would require a cfc to capture the initial email sending
request and then cfschedule several separate requests of, say, batches of
2,000 emails each about 2 minutes apart, then finally a scheduled task to
delete the previous tasks. Could get messy with the number of requests our
server deals with and if there are a couple of separate user requests to
send 5,000 email each around about the same time then the spool directory
may exceed the threshold where the SMTP session closes and CF shrugs and
gives up.
