What version of CF were you running? In CFMX you have the option of turning http status codes on and off.
If they are turned on (not the default setting as far as I remember) the web server will return http status codes such as 504 for internal server errors in the CFMX server. Internet Explorer being the lovely useful piece of software that it is, reads the status code and renders a blank page for some status codes.
